NERIDA TYSON-CHEW - Composer

Composer Nerida Tyson-Chew not only conducted the Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra and Melbourne Chorale for the films soundtrack recording and CD but played the movie's haunting love theme herself on piano. Says Yahoo: "Nerida is fantastically open to being highly experimental. She'd laugh out loud whenever we hit on some unorthodox way of using orchestration, or choir, or lyrics to enhance a shift from romantic comedy to terror or satire." Inspired by her first viewing of Mr ACCIDENT, Nerida stayed up until dawn composing the haunting 'Universally lonely' love theme which takes Roger from his tragic childhood and delivers him as a transformed person at the movie's climax.

Nerida's career in Australia started with immediate accolades on her first Australian feature film score for 'Hotel Sorrento'. Directed by Richard Franklin and starring Dame Joan Plowright, Caroline Goodall, John Hargreaves, Tara Morice, Ray Barrett and Caroline Gilmer, Nerida received an AFI nomination for Best Original Score and was awarded Best Music from the Film Critics Circle of Australia. She also received the award for Best Original Score for a Feature Film from The Australian Guild of Screen Composers, and a nomination from The Australian Performing Rights Association for her 'Hotel Sorrento' score.

She worked again with Richard Franklin on David Williamson's film 'Brilliant Lies' starring Anthony La Paglia. The film earned Nerida nominations for Best Song for an original Feature Film for her pop-song performed by Kate Ceberano. Nerida composed, orchestrated and conducted the music score for the upcoming feature film 'Kick', starring dancers Russell Page (Bangara Dance Theatre Group), Rebecca Yates (The Australian Ballet) and Paul Mercurio (Strictly Ballroom). Nerida composed the orchestral and contemporary score for the Jack Thompson and Jackie MacKenzie film 'Under the Lighthouse Dancing'. For her work on 'Bryan Brown's Twisted Tales' she was awarded Best Music for a Television Series from The Australian Guild of Screen Composers. The Annie-nominated film 'Ferngully 2 - The Magical Rescue' was Nerida's first 20th Century Fox film. A composer and orchestrator on Warner Bros. critically acclaimed 'Batman - The Animated Series', Nerida went on to score the AFI-Nominated series 'The Adventures of Sam', earning nominations for Best Music for a TV Series by The Australian Guild of Screen Composers, as well as the nomination Best Television Theme by The Australian Performing Rights Association. Nerida has also won awards and nominations for her original scores for Rebecca Gibney's 'Halifax f.p.' series of telemovies, 'The Lost World' T.V. series and the animated series 'Crocadoo'. Nerida was Soundtrack Producer for Sanrio Puroland, a theme park being built in Japan. Awarded the first Academy of Motion Pictures Composer Internship, she gained experience as a music editor on several major films, including 'Aliens 3' and 'Batman- The Animated Series'.

Nerida graduated with Honours, Bachelor of Music in Composition from the University of Sydney, studying with Peter Sculthorpe, and was awarded the prestigious Albert Travelling Scholarship. Nerida holds a Master's Degree certificate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television as a Harry Warren Scholar from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. While at USC, she studied with notable film composers including Henry Mancini, Jerry Goldsmith, Bruce Broughton, Bill Conti, Irwin Kostal, and Norman Buddy Baker.
